Finding Climate Solutions in Halifax’s Coastal Wetlands

The next climate solution is hiding in the marsh. Through its HRM Blue Carbon Pilot and Climate-Ready Pathway project, Blue Maritimes Society will work with the Community Eelgrass Restoration Initiative (CERI), with support from HCi3, to better understand how coastal wetlands in Halifax/Kjipuktuk store carbon and protect communities from the impacts of climate change.

Over the next year and a half, the team will study three representative coastal wetland sites. They will then translate their findings into practical tools for future conservation and restoration: maps, a blue carbon baseline, a prioritization framework, as well as a policy brief to help guide climate-smart decision-making. By building a stronger understanding of these ecosystems today, the project lays the groundwork for healthier coastlines, climate resilience, and more informed planning in Halifax and beyond.

It’s a good reminder that some of our best climate allies are already part of the landscape.
