A Bicycle-Powered Approach to Food Access

Every week, volunteers with Bike Brigade HFX load up bicycles with groceries and prepared meals, then pedal them across Halifax to community fridges, households, and shelters. The community-led program partners with local organizations and markets to redistribute surplus food, making healthy food more accessible while replacing short vehicle trips with low-carbon deliveries.

Since launching in 2024, Bike Brigade HFX has grown to 84 volunteers and completed more than 300 deliveries, transporting over 6,000 meals across the Halifax Regional Municipality. With support from HCi3, the organization will invest in volunteer training, community outreach, and operational improvements to strengthen and expand its bicycle-powered food distribution network. The best climate solutions are often powered by something even stronger than batteries: community.
